New Police and Courts Facility Ready to Serve the Community
TESSERE partnered with the City of Great Bend, Kansas to deliver comprehensive programming, design, and construction phase services for the new Police and Courts Facility. The previous building, constructed in 1938, had exceeded its useful life and no longer supported the operational needs of the Police Department or Municipal Court. TESSERE began the project with a detailed programming effort to understand current workflows, space requirements, and long‑term needs, planning for at least 20 years of anticipated growth.
With programming complete and funding secured, TESSERE and the design team collaborated with stakeholders to refine the vision, develop the architectural design, and guide the project through construction.
The completed facility features separate public lobbies for police and courts, secure records and court clerk offices, a 50‑seat courtroom, administrative and investigative offices, a briefing and squad room that also functions as a storm shelter, locker and fitness areas, secure evidence storage, and an enclosed police garage. The site was selected prior to the design team’s engagement which presented unique challenges due to its limited size and the presence of a municipal well pump station that needed to remain in operation. Careful planning and coordination allowed the team to successfully accommodate the building, circulation, and required parking within the site constraints.
