NIAR Hub for Advanced Manufacturing and Research

Wichita State University - Innovation Campus

TESSERE designed the new NIAR Hub for Advanced Manufacturing and Research (HAMR), a 170,000‑square‑foot, two‑story research facility located on the Wichita State University Innovation Campus. The building supports advanced manufacturing, applied research, and workforce training within a highly flexible and future‑ready environment.

The facility features six high‑bay research laboratories designed to accommodate evolving technologies: a Robotics and Automation Lab, Emerging Technology and Digital Manufacturing Lab, Composites Lab, Advanced Machining and Prototyping Lab, Quality and Performance Lab, and a future lab to be defined as program needs evolve. Student and faculty support spaces are integrated throughout the second floor, to encourage collaboration and hands‑on learning.

Each lab was designed with durable, industrial finishes, such as painted CMU walls, exposed structural ceilings where appropriate, and sealed concrete floors, to support demanding research activities. Overhead doors located within labs and corridors allow for efficient forklift and material movement throughout the building.

The facility’s highly specialized research equipment required custom‑designed HVAC and plumbing systems to meet precise requirements. Floor slabs were thickened and engineered to strict vibration tolerances to support sensitive equipment. Mechanical systems are accommodated both within the building and on the roof, and includes a bridge crane to support laboratory operations.

Site improvements included minor modifications to adjacent parking areas to allow truck access, ensuring efficient deliveries and operational functionality. The HAMR facility positions NIAR and Wichita State University at the forefront of smart manufacturing, applied research, and technology innovation.
