Via Christi Health Cancer Institute

Wichita, KS

TESSERE provided architectural services for the full renovation of 40,700 square feet on the seventh floor of St. Francis Hospital, transforming the space into a comprehensive cancer institute—a true “hospital within a hospital.”

The renovated floor features 40 spacious private patient rooms, including two radiation therapy suites with private bathrooms and six dedicated bone marrow treatment rooms. An ambulatory infusion center offers four private treatment bays and three community bays. Integrated therapy spaces support holistic healing with dedicated rooms for yoga, art therapy, massage therapy, and a unique laugh therapy room designed in collaboration with Warren Theatres. Additional amenities include two family gathering rooms, temporary family sleep quarters, a family laundry center, and a cancer education and resource center equipped with internet access. The project also includes administrative offices and staff support areas.

The environment was designed to promote healing not only through exceptional clinical care but also through thoughtful support of patients’ families, acknowledging their vital role in the recovery process.

Evidence‑based design strategies guided the planning and layout to ensure an efficient, functional, and patient‑centered space, one that fosters comfort, dignity, and well‑being throughout the healing journey.
