Westport Ice House

Kansas City, MO

The Mutual Ice Company Building, originally constructed in 1907 in Kansas City, Missouri, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. When transforming the structure into what is now the Westport Ice House, TESSERE was tasked with preserving its historic character while thoughtfully adapting it for modern use. The result is a revitalized building that maintains its place as a landmark within the historic Westport district.

TESSERE designed the 6,200‑square‑foot renovation, working with the building’s limestone exterior and wood‑frame interior supported by heavy timber elements. New openings were carefully created in the central limestone wall to improve connectivity between the north and south sections of the building. TESSERE also assisted with the preparation of historic preservation tax credit documentation, ensuring the project met all requirements while honoring the building’s architectural heritage.
