ABQ BioPark | Alligator Snapping Turtle Habitat Remodel

TESSERE partnered with ABQ BioPark to transform an aging alligator snapping turtle habitat into a more naturalistic, engaging environment that enhances animal welfare, improves operations, and deepens guest understanding of this threatened species. Designed within the existing footprint of the Reptile Building, the renovation modernizes the habitat while supporting the long-term care of Wilson, the BioPark’s resident alligator snapping turtle. 

Designing for Natural Behaviors 

The remodeled habitat encourages a wider range of natural behaviors through a larger pool with varied depths, natural substrate, accessible basking areas, and nesting space. These enhancements provide greater animal choice while creating a more dynamic and enriching environment. 

Behind the scenes, upgraded life-support systems improve water quality, while enhanced staff access supports safer and more efficient feeding, training, and husbandry activities. 

Telling the Story of a Southeastern Swamp 

Rather than focusing on a single species, the habitat immerses guests in the Southeastern U.S. swamp ecosystem where alligator snapping turtles live in the wild. Naturalistic scenery, interpretive graphics, and conservation messaging introduce visitors to the diverse wildlife that shares this habitat and the turtle’s role as an important apex predator. 

A companion firefly conservation element expands the story beyond the exhibit, connecting guests to broader conversations about native species and ecosystem health. 

Meaningful Improvements Within an Existing Space 

A curved acrylic viewing window creates closer animal encounters while improving sightlines throughout the exhibit. Through thoughtful renovation rather than expansion, the project demonstrates how targeted improvements can significantly enhance animal wellbeing, operational function, and guest engagement within an existing facility.
