The Evolution of Wichita State University’s Campus

Over the past decade, Wichita State University has nearly doubled the size of its campus and TESSERE is proud to say we have been a design partner during this exciting period of growth. Our dedication to the success of the University and our passion for serving our clients is evident in the recently completed Partnership Building 11 (P11) on Innovation Campus. Completed in August 2024, this latest addition is the next step in realizing the University’s long-term master plan. Located on the east side of campus, this three-story shell building was designed as a multi-tenant space, with room for Multiple tenants per floor.

The First Tenant – Club 95

Paying homage to the University being established in 1895, Club 95 is the first tenant in PB11, occupying the west half of the third floor. This space features an exterior patio offering a panoramic view that reflects the growth happening at Wichita State University. This space provides a front-row seat to guests to witness the growth and development of Innovation Campus and how the community and businesses have come together to support the next generation of students.

The Purpose of Club 95

John Tomblin, Executive Vice President for Research and Industry and Defense Programs at Wichita State University, envisioned a space that could offer the same level of sophistication as the upscale venues WSU leadership often took their clients to; venues located off-campus. The goal was to design an exceptional space on campus that provides the same upscale, entertaining atmosphere, allowing the University to host prestigious clientele without leaving campus.

The design of Club 95 includes a variety of spaces that fosters areas of discussion, relationship building, relaxation, dining and to conduct formal business meeting. These include:

  • Dining Room
  • Lounge Spaces with different seating types, or focal points (i.e. fireplace)
  • Conference Rooms
  • Coffee/Kitchenette
  • Fully-stocked Bar
  • Prep Kitchen to accommodate catered events
  • Exterior Patio with seating, heaters and a fire table

These amenities are critical in providing a space that creates an atmosphere and level of hospitality that Wichita State University invests in its clients.

The Club 95 Experience

The experience at Club 95 goes beyond just the physical amenities. When TESSERE, began designing the space, we wanted to create a journey that started from the moment of stepping off the elevator. The design’s objective was to lead guests through the space by sparking their curiosity and encouraging them to explore further; to touch, look closer, and engage with the environment.

The design concept was inspired by the four elements – fire, earth, air, and water, which are woven throughout the space and integral in creating an environment that enhanced the client’s vision. Several design elements include:

  • Specialty wall coverings bringing texture, warmth and dimension to the wall surfaces
  • Architectural mesh ceiling feature in the dining room that mimics the movement of fire and imagery of the entry 3-dimensional accent wall
  • Interior Fireplace and exterior fire table
  • Wood beams, slats, ceiling clouds and dimensional wood walls provide a connection to the exterior elements and bringing those indoors
  • Fabrics and patterns within the thoughtfully selected furniture and décor

These elements weave the design together, making each decision purposeful. One standout feature is the mesh ceiling in the dining room which is a product manufactured in New Zealand. This detail provides natural, soft movement throughout the space, adding a dynamic touch to the overall design.

Key Takeaways

3-D Tool Component: One of the most valuable takeaways from the project involved utilizing 3-D modeling tools early in the design process. These tools helped bring the vision to life. Additionally, the 3-D model and applied materials within the model allowed for more effective communication with subcontractors, helping them engage in project budgeting and early design input. This tool bridged communication between the client, the internal team, and the consultants.

Pushing Boundaries: Another key takeaway for the team was learning how to push the boundaries of design while still ensuring durability and functionality. This was achieved through the creative use of textures, colors, and design accents throughout the space.

The Power of the Elements: The integration of the four elements into the design gave every decision a clear purpose and direction. From the initial concept to final execution, the design team kept this theme in mind, resulting in a cohesive and immersive experience that flows naturally as guests move through Club 95.
